$500,000 surprise for Papamoa couple
A Papamoa woman is in shock after her husband revealed they had won $500,000 Lotto First Division on Saturday night.
The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, learnt of the big win when her husband broke with tradition and checked their ticket by himself.
“We normally check our tickets together every Sunday morning – it’s just a bit of a ritual that we have. But on Sunday morning I had popped out to find a new washing machine, as ours had just broken, when I got a call from my husband,” the winner said.
“He said ‘Where are you? You need to come home quickly.’ I told him that I was just going to the bank then I’d head home, but he said ‘don’t worry about going to the bank – I’ve got that sorted.’
“I never imagined that would mean that we’d soon be depositing half a million dollars into our account,” laughed the winner.
Intrigued by her husband’s comments, the winner rushed home to find out exactly what was going on.
“When he told me we’d won I Lotto, I honestly thought he was joking. It was quite an amazing feeling, I think I was even more excited than he was!”
With the money now safely in the winner’s bank account, the couple are excited to bring their kids together again for a true Kiwi Christmas .
“Our kids are all living overseas, so it can be a bit hard at the holidays. The first thing we’re doing with our winnings is booking flights to bring the whole family back to New Zealand for the summer.
“We’re so excited to share some quality family time together,” said the winner.
The winning ticket was sold at Pak N Save Papamoa on Wednesday 16 November.
