Auckland Lotto winner rolling in $1 million windfall
A last-minute dash to buy toilet paper has left an Auckland woman flush with cash after winning $1 million on a Lotto ticket she picked up at the same time.
The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought her winning ticket on a whim after stopping by the supermarket to stock up on home essentials.
“As I was leaving the store I saw that the Lotto counter was still open and thought I might as well grab a ticket – you never know, right?” said the winner.
But it wasn’t until the following morning that the winner discovered just how fortuitous her decision had been.
“I was getting ready for work when I read in the paper that the winning ticket had been sold at our local supermarket, so I pulled my ticket out of my wallet and started checking it. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I realised I had all the numbers,” the winner said.
After double-checking her ticket, the winner jumped straight in the car and headed to Lotto NZ’s Auckland head office to claim her million-dollar prize.
“I just wanted to get the ticket out of my hands – I was so worried I’d lose it! I didn’t even have a chance to tell my husband beforehand, it all happened so quickly,” the winner laughed.
With the winning ticket safely delivered to Lotto NZ, the winner started thinking about how she’ll spend her newfound fortune – and helping the community was top of mind.
“I love animals and do all I can to help them – I foster kittens, feed strays and find homes for as many as possible. This prize means I’ll be able to do even more, I’m absolutely thrilled,” said the winner.
After taking care of Auckland’s furry friends, the winner is looking forward to setting up her family and indulging in an overseas holiday.
“My husband and I will definitely pay off the mortgage and treat ourselves to our dream holiday to the United States. I feel very, very lucky.”
The winning ticket was sold at Pak N Save Ormiston in Flat Bush, Auckland.
