Coastie scores $500,000 Lotto win
A Whangaparaoa woman could not contain her excitement after winning $500,000 in Lotto First Division on Saturday night.
The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, was relaxing at home on Saturday night when she caught the Lotto draw on TV and wrote down the winning numbers.
“It’s not often I see the Lotto draw, but I was sitting on the couch eating tea and thought I better write the numbers down so I can check my ticket later on.”
After dinner, the woman grabbed her ticket from her handbag and started ticking the numbers off one by one.
“When I first looked at my ticket I could see straight away I had three numbers in a row. Then as I went along and all the numbers kept matching up. I was so excited – I think I must have checked it a million times!”
The woman then ran into her bedroom where her husband was sleeping to share the good news.
“She just came in and started shaking me like a crazy person – I thought something terrible must have happened. She kept saying ‘we’ve won, we’ve won!’ and when I looked up she was standing there holding a Lotto ticket with a huge grin on her face,” said the winner’s husband.
After double checking the results online and seeing that New World Whangaparaoa had sold a First Division ticket, the couple tried their best to carry on as usual.
“Sunday was a such a strange day. We’d barely slept the night before and everyone on the coast was talking about who the winner might be. It was such a surreal feeling knowing that you are that person,” laughed the winner.
With the winnings now safely in their account, the couple have started dreaming about how they will spend their small fortune.
“We’d love to get a new car, and also go on an overseas holiday. The rest of the money we’re just going to stick it in the bank and sit on it for awhile. This win will certainly make our lives a little bit easier now,” said the winner.
